Music Notation Software
Which music notation software should I get?
I am looking at buying a notation program and feel a little lost. I have used an old version of Finale but its not mine so I can’t upgrade. I can’t afford the full versions of Finale or Sibelius, so I am looking at Finale Allegro, Sibelius First, and Sibelius student. I read up and think Sibelius student is going to be best for the price because its only $99 and I can always upgrade when I have enough money. Does anyone have any good input?
I would absolutely buy Finale. I have used both Finale and Sibelius, and I find that Sibelius hardly does any of the things that I need it to. On top of that, despite all of the vouchers for its accessibility, I could not find any of the functions I wanted except very basic note entry. Finale has a relatively steep learning curve, but if you read the guides and do a few of the tutorials (not all of them if you don’t have to; they’re long) you will do fine. Sibelius is just too confusing and can do very little.
You might also want to look at the educational discounts for the software if you’re a student – I managed to get Finale 2008 for only about $230 USD from the Student Software Store website. Shop around a bit online for Finale. You can certainly find it cheaper than on the Finale site.
