Music Modes
What is the key to understanding how to play modes in music?
I have asked this question a few times and the result is that people keep telling me what they are – “I know exactly what they are ” I just don’t know how to incorporated on my guitar – in general question really is How would “you” use them ?
Modes allow you to convey certain moods. For instance, if your rhythm guitar is playing a static G chord, and then you play a G major scale (Ionian mode) over it. The mood will be happy, and it will resolve nicely back to the G. If however, you play Dorian, Phrygian, or even Aeloian you will get a darker mood, and in the case of Phrygian a slightly Spanish feel. Locrian never really resolves and it may feel like the melody is “lost” or wandering. Lydian and Mixolydian are both “happy” but not like Ionian.
